SAE J3400 and the NACS Standard: What 'Tesla Compatible' Actually Means Now

NACS went from Tesla's proprietary plug to the standardized SAE J3400 connector the US industry is converging on. What the standard covers, who ships it natively, and what an adapter does and does not get you.

SAE J3400 is the standardized version of Tesla’s NACS connector — the process that turned a proprietary plug into an open industry standard any manufacturer can implement. It is the reason “Tesla compatible” stopped being a marketing phrase and became a checkbox on a spec sheet. Here is what the standard actually covers, and what it means when you are standing at a charger.

From NACS to J3400: what happened

Tesla opened its connector design in late 2022 and named it the North American Charging Standard. That was a design publication, not a standard — no independent body governed it. SAE International took it through formal standardization as SAE J3400, publishing the technical information report in 2023 and progressing it to a full standard. The distinction matters: a standard means any automaker, charger manufacturer, or certification lab can build to a governed, versioned document rather than to whatever Tesla publishes.

The result was the fastest connector transition in automotive history. Nearly every automaker selling EVs in the US committed to NACS ports between mid-2023 and 2024. The US market is now converging on one connector for the first time.

What the standard covers

J3400 defines the physical connector and its electrical behavior for both AC and DC charging through a single plug shape. The design is meaningfully smaller and lighter than CCS — one of the practical reasons drivers prefer it. The same port accepts Level 2 AC charging and DC fast charging without the CCS approach of a separate two-pin DC extension below the AC connector.

What J3400 does not cover is network access. A native NACS port gets you a physical connection at a Supercharger. Whether you can charge there is a network policy and software question — which is why “Tesla compatible” still has three distinct tiers.

The three tiers of “Tesla compatible” in 2026

Native NACS port. New EVs from most major automakers now ship with a J3400 port. These vehicles plug into Superchargers directly, no adapter. They still need CCS adapters at the shrinking number of CCS-only stations.

CCS vehicle with a NACS adapter. The bulk of the existing non-Tesla fleet. An OEM-supplied or aftermarket NACS adapter allows Supercharger access at sites enabled for non-Tesla vehicles. Which networks carry which connector now

Tesla Superchargers are NACS-native, with Magic Dock CCS at select sites. Electrify America and EVgo are mid-transition — CCS remains standard, with NACS cables rolling out at new builds. ChargePoint DC sites are CCS with NACS appearing on new hardware. The current per-network connector detail is maintained in our network comparison table, under “Connector + adapter compatibility.”

The transition’s awkward middle: for several more years, the answer to “do I need an adapter?” depends on your car’s port, the station’s cables, and the station’s software policy — all three. Our rule of thumb: a NACS-port vehicle should carry a CCS adapter, and a CCS-port vehicle should carry a NACS adapter, until the cable mix settles.

What to check before you rely on it

A J3400 connector on the station means the plug fits. It does not mean the session will start — network access policy, payment handshake, and your vehicle’s software version all still apply.
